Royal St George's
Located in Sandwich, Kent, Royal St George's Golf Club was the first club outside of Scotland to host the Open. The Open was last hosted at Royal St George's in 2003 when rookie Ben Curtis came out on top ahead of Thomas Bjorn to win his first professional title.
Featured in the 007 classic, Goldfinger, the course is set out in wild duneland, many holes feature blind shots, and the fourth hole has the deepest bunker in championship golf, knick named Big Bertha it's well over 6ft deep.
The course is a mile or so outside of Sandwich, a small historic town in Kent with many original medieval buildings and just a handful of small inns and hotels. There are plenty of traditional bed and breakfast places in the surrounding area and the much larger town of Ramsgate is just 5 miles away.
The New Inn in Sandwich, has ensuite bed and breakfast accommodation and a friendly and comfortable bar area with home cooked food available all day.
Deal is a lovely quiet seaside resort and fishing port a few miles south of Sandwich, with accommodation such as the The Beachbrow Hotel, small, family run with helpful welcoming staff. The hotel was founded in the late 1700s, when Lord Nelson would berth in Deal.
