Muirfield 2013 Open Golf Championships
Around 40 minutes drive from Edinburgh, Muirfield on the east coast of Scotland hosted the Open Championship sixteen times, most recently in 2013 when Phil Mickelson shot a final round of 66 to win his fifth major title ahead of runner-up Henrik Stenson; previously the Open was held at Muirfield in 2002 when Ernie Els won the trophy.
Muirfield is based in Gullane, a small town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, there are a number of high quality golf courses in the area and of course high quality accommodation such as Fenton Tower and Greywalls.
The Muirfield Links Course
The course has an unusual arrangement of two loops of nine holes, one clockwise, one counterclockwise, so that every hole on the course provides different wind direction.
Also famous as the home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which holds the distinction of being the oldest organised golf club in the world.
