Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake hosted the Open Championship in 2014.
Rory McIlroy won by two strokes over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia. This win was McIlroy’s third major championship, and at the age of 25, he became the third-youngest player to win three majors. He also became the first European player to win three majors by the age of 25 since Bobby Jones in 1930. Additionally, McIlroy became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2000 to win both the Open Championship and the PGA Championship in the same year.
Location on the Wirral Peninsula
Located on the west coast on the Wirral Peninsula, Royal Liverpool is just over 10 miles west of Liverpool and 20 miles north of Chester, the area boasts plenty of hotels and lodgings, both in Hoylake, in nearby towns such as Leasowe and West Kirby, as well as in Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Rory McIlroy had a strong performance throughout the tournament. He had a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole on the second round of the tournament. He used a 7-iron to ace the hole and he became the first player in the history of the Open Championship to have a hole-in-one on that hole. In addition, McIlroy had a bogey-free final round, which helped him secure the victory. He made a total of 17 birdies and just 4 bogeys over the four rounds. He had a total score of 17-under-par 271, which was two strokes better than Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia, who tied for second place.
Regarding errors, McIlroy had a bogey on the par-4 7th hole in the third round, but he was able to recover quickly, he birdied the next hole. Also on the final round, he had a bogey on the par-4 9th hole, but he was able to recover again and birdied the next hole.
History of Royal Liverpool Golf Club
The Club at Royal Liverpool was founded in 1869 on what was then a race course. It was the first club to host an international match, which took place between Scotland and England in 1902. The Club will be hosting the Open for the 12th time in it’s history.
Famous visitors include John Lennon, who used to cross the course to visit his girlfriend!
